Correctional Theory: Context and Consequences

Product Description
This accessible book identifies and evaluates the major competing theories used to guide the goals, policies, and practices of the correctional system. The authors demonstrate that changes in theories can legitimize changing ways of treating and punishing offenders, and they help readers understand how changes in the social and political context of U.S. society impact correctional theory and policy. Designed to motivate readers to become sophisticated consumers of correctional information, the book emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based information to guide decisions, rather than relying on nonscientific commonsense or ideology-based beliefs.Correctional Theory: Context and Consequences Review
Okay - what can I say? I teach corrections. This book engages students and provides a first person style account of the theoretical perspectives - it is what a textbook should be. Beyond that, I think the critique of restorative justice and focus on the value of rehabilitation is profound. Well done!Unfortunately, many institutions today seem to be atheoretical because. pragmatically speaking, corrections is about the pragmatics of getting a job done so students might just want to know what jobs in prisons are like... With that said, I prefer books like this - that make me think about what jobs in prisons are like - rather than tell me what they are like. Well done!
I heartily recommend this text.
