Product Description

In an examination of the effects of the Civil War on the rural Southern home front, Mark V. Wetherington looks closely at the experiences of white "plain folk"--mostly yeoman farmers and craftspeople--in the wiregrass region of southern Georgia before, during, and after the war. Although previous scholars have argued that common people in the South fought the battles of the region's elites, Wetherington contends that the plain folk in this Georgia region fought for their own self-interest.

Plain folk, whose communities were outside areas in which slaves were the majority of the population, feared black emancipation would allow former slaves to move from cotton plantations to subsistence areas like their piney woods communities. Thus, they favored secession, defended their way of life by fighting in the Confederate army, and kept the antebellum patriarchy intact in their home communities. Unable by late 1864 to sustain a two-front war in Virginia and at home, surviving veterans took their fight to the local political arena, where they used paramilitary tactics and ritual violence to defeat freedpeople and their white Republican allies, preserving a white patriarchy that relied on ex-Confederate officers for a new generation of leadership.

Plain Folk's Fight: The Civil War and Reconstruction in Piney Woods Georgia (Civil War America) Review

The Civil War's reconstruction process in Piney Woods Georgia is the narrowed focus of Plain Folk's Fight, an in-depth examination of the efforts to the Civil War on the rural South. Race consciousness was at the forefront of a fight by rural whites to defend their way of life in their neighborhood. These rural folk helped tip Georgia toward secession in 1861, supplied troops during the war, and found themselves divided in loyalty to the Confederate nation and their neighbors. Chapters focus on volunteer units, family organization, stories of hardship and independence, and black/white relationships affected by terrorism. Not for the casual Civil War student, but a 'most' for any serious discussion or collection.

Product Description

As a children's librarian, you are increasingly being called upon to support schools and parents in teaching children to read from early literacy initiatives and read-alouds to parent workshops and collection development endeavors. Yet, if you're like most public librarians, you probably have no clue as to what reading strategies other educators use. Understanding reading instruction theory and practice can help you function better in these roles and communicate more effectively with other educators and parents.

Solving the Reading Riddle: The Librarian's Guide to Reading Instruction explains the theories and shows you how to effectively integrate reading instruction theory into your roles as reading advocate, family reading coach, partner with educators, and keeper of the books. Designed for public librarians, this book is also beneficial reading for LIS students in children's librarianship courses, and for teacher librarians needing more information on this topic.

Solving the Reading Riddle: The Librarian's Guide to Reading Instruction Review

One of the primary responsibilities of the librarians (especially in the children's department or school media center) is to assist their young patrons with reading advice and selection compatible with that child's needs for such assistance. It is incumbent upon the librarian to work with parents and teachers in helping children learn to read by providing information and suggestions appropriate to motivating a child to read, as well as materials suitable for that purpose. In "Solving The Reading Riddle: The Librarian's Guide to Reading Instruction", independent library youth services consultant and children's book reviewer Rita Soltan has written a 120-page handbook of information, advice, and instruction on reading instruction theories and practices ranging form early literacy initiatives and read-aloud programs, to parent workshops and data collection. Very nicely organized and thoroughly 'user friendly', "Solving The Reading Riddle" is an ideal Library Science curriculum textbook and a highly recommended addition to academic library Science reference collections and professional reading lists.

Product Description

The world's eyes were on Mississippi during the summer of 1964, when civil rights activists launched an ambitious African American voter registration project and were met with violent resistance from white supremacists. Sue Sojourner and her husband arrived in Holmes County, Mississippi, in the wake of this historic time, known as "Freedom Summer."

From September 1964 until her departure from the state in 1969, Sojourner collected an incredible number of documents, oral histories, and photographs chronicling the dramatic events that she witnessed. In this remarkable book, written in collaboration with Cheryl Reitan, Sojourner presents a fascinating account of one of the civil rights movement's most active and broad-based community organizing operations in the South.

Thunder of Freedom unites Sojourner's personal experiences with her insights regarding the dynamics of race relations in the 1960s South, providing readers with a unique look at the struggle for rights and equality in Mississippi. Illustrated with selections from Sojourner's acclaimed catalog of photographs, this profound book tells the powerful, often intimate stories of ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things.

Thunder of Freedom: Black Leadership and the Transformation of 1960s Mississippi (Civil Rights and the Struggle for Black Equality in the Twentieth Century) Review

This is a very important story about the struggle black citizens of Mississippi had to fulfill their right to vote in the 1960s. This writer told this story with great appreciation and respect for the citizens of Holmes County, Mississippi. Sue Sojourner and her husband, Henry Lorenzi spent the years from 1964 to 1969 assisting in community building and voter registration in this very racist and disenfranchized area. Sue kept meticulous notes on the efforts in which they participated. She collected massive documentation and produced beautiful photographs of the African American folks of the region. From these resources she has knitted for us a beautifully written story in which to see and understand what happened there.
The book has been in production since that time and is as important now as it has finally appeared. We gain insight of the large role local people played in transformation of 1960s Mississippi and reminds us to be very cautious to guard these freedoms and protect the work accomplished while we continue to transform the whole United States.

This enchanting collection of traditional English folktales reflects the depth and diversity of the folk heritage of Britain, and illustrates the ties between stories, land, and people. There's a story for every listener from Teeny Tiny and The Pixies' Beds for young children to spooky ghost stories and witch tales, such as Wild Edric and Jenny Greenteeth for older readers and listeners. For each tale, the authors cite a region of origin. Like other titles in the series, the book contains background information: notes on the tales, a brief history of England, a map, photographs, a glossary, and a bibliography of sources. Brief biographies of the tellers are also included. All of these elements combine to form an apt resource for read-alouds and programs, an indispensable source for storytellers, and a great research tool for students. All grade levels.

English Folktales (World Folklore Series) Review

Jeesh! These are incredibly banal and bland retellings of a mismash of stories, some based in folklore and some, amazingly, inane kiddy campfire fare. The editors have the gall to include a tale called "The Girl and the Anorak," an even-sillier-the-usual rendition of that tired old chestnut about the git who picks up a female hitchhiker, loans her his anorak (jacket/sweater/raincoat/windbreaker), goes looking for it later and discovers that the girl was actually a GHOST KILLED IN A ROAD ACCIDENT and his anorak (jacket/sweater/raincoat/windbreaker) is HANGING ON HER TOMBSTONE.

Yawn.

Don't waste your money.

Product Description

Education beyond the Mesas is the fascinating story of how generations of Hopi schoolchildren from northeastern Arizona “turned the power” by using compulsory federal education to affirm their way of life and better their community. Sherman Institute in Riverside, California, one of the largest off-reservation boarding schools in the United States, followed other federally funded boarding schools of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in promoting the assimilation of indigenous people into mainstream America. Many Hopi schoolchildren, deeply conversant in Hopi values and traditional education before being sent to Sherman Institute, resisted this program of acculturation. Immersed in learning about another world, generations of Hopi children drew on their culture to skillfully navigate a system designed to change them irrevocably. In fact, not only did the Hopi children strengthen their commitment to their families and communities while away in the land of oranges, they used their new skills, fluency in English, and knowledge of politics and economics to help their people when they eventually returned home.
Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert draws on interviews, archival records, and his own experiences growing up in the Hopi community to offer a powerful account of a quiet, enduring triumph.
