Product Description

Whether opening saloons, raising cattle, or promoting sporting events, George Lewis "Tex" Rickard (1870-1929) possessed a drive to be the best. After an early career as a cowboy and Texas sheriff, Rickard pioneered the largest ranch in South America, built a series of profitable saloons in the Klondike and Nevada gold rushes, and turned boxing into a million-dollar sport. As "the Father of Madison Square Garden," he promoted over 200 fights, including some of the most notable of the 20th century: the "Longest Fight," the "Great White Hope," fight, and the famous "Long Count" fight. Along the way, he rubbed shoulders with some of history's most renowned figures, including Teddy Roosevelt, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, John Ringling, Jack Dempsey, and Gene Tunney. This detailed biography chronicles Rickard's colorful life and his critical role in the evolution of boxing from a minor sport to a modern spectacle.

Tex Rickard: Boxing's Greatest Promoter Review

Over and above the detailed history of Tex Rickard, the book is filled with information about the period from the 1880s to the 1920s. The foreward begins with an interesting look at the Roman boxing rings and the size of audiences not seen again until the time of Tex Rickard. Usually, Tex Rickard is only mentioned in the background of boxing annals; yet as Aycock and Scott point out, he was as interesting and tough as the boxers he promoted. The authors cover: his boyhood days in Texas, his gold rush adventures, his connection to Theodore Roosevelt when TR went to explore the Amazon and found Rickard already in South America, the history of Madison Square Garden, with interesting photos and fight details, especially the fact that the Dempsey-Carpentier, and Dempsey-Tunney I were much more competitive than everyone has usually reported. Even fight promotions before Rickard are interestingly told. What the authors call "The Longest Fight" (the Gans-Nelson 1906 fight), one of the most interesting chapters of their previous Joe Gans biography, by the way, has been re-told in this book from the point of view of Rickard, the promoter and referee with many interesting details included, such as how close Nelson came to dying after the fight. Overall, it was surprising to learn that Rickard had actually planned and promoted 8 Madison Square Gardens, only 2 of which are still in existence, the second one is now the home of the Celtics. While this book focusses on boxing, it would be nice to have included more about the other sports Rickard promoted, such as New York hockey.

IIS 5.0: A Beginner's Guide (Network Professional's Library) Review

I bought this book thinking it was a book for beginner's like myself. And, even though it does cover all of the stuff that I needed to learn, install, and administer IIS 5, it just has so much more. I see the reviews here and they all talk about something really neat about the book. And, I agree with all of them. But, something that really sticks with me after reading through this book is how also walks through HTML, DHTML, VBS, ASP, Java, and how to connect to databases. I'm really new to internet servers and languages, but this book was easy enough to read that I understand it completely. And, I know exactly how it all works with IIS because of all the script examples included in the pages. I didn't know how much IIS uses VB Script. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Fully revised to reflect the latest developments, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: For patients, their families and interested physicians, Second Edition, is a valuable source of straightforward advice and dependable information for everyone who is affected by HCM.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: For Patients, Their Families and Interested Physicians Review

If you or someone you love suffers from this disease, then this book is a must read. It completely explains the condition in a way that is easy to understand. It also covers the various ways currently used to identify and treat the symptoms. This book was co-authored by the leading cardiologist in the field and the president of the HCMA support group [....]Additionally, I would recommend contacting the HCMA for more information and support. They can put you in touch with a specialist in your area who can better help you treat this disease.

My wife was diagnosed with this condition in April 2002 by a local cardiologist who did not know much about HCM and should have diagnosed it in January with the first test. After joining the HCMA and receiving this book, we knew more than our local doctor. The HCMA hooked us up with a Specialist at the Cleveland Clinic and where we are currently getting treatment. As a matter of fact, Dr. Lever at the Cleveland Clinic even recommended this book for us to read! He was very pleased that we had already done that!

What is this book about?

With Beginning Visual C#, you will learn how to use Visual C# from first principles. Visual C# is an object-oriented programming language designed specifically for programming Microsoft's new platform, the .NET Framework. You'll quickly and easily learn how to write Visual C# code and create your own applications for both Windows and the Web.

What does this book cover?

With clear explanations and hands-on examples, you will learn about the following topics:

  • The C# language from the ground up
  • Designing and writing object-oriented programs
  • .NET programming with C#
  • Working with Windows forms and controls
  • Creating graphics and printing
  • Accessing databases and files
  • Writing web application and web services in Visual C#

This book will be an indispensable guide as you learn to write C# programs, gradually explaining the key concepts of Visual C# and .NET as your skills develop, with exercises at the end of chapters to test yourself. Starting with a thorough tutorial of the Visual C# language and object-oriented programming, you will progress to learn how to apply your understanding to programming the .NET Framework.

Who is this book for?

Beginning Visual C# is ideal for beginners with little background in programming, and for relatively inexperienced programmers who want to move from a language that doesn't support object-oriented programming techniques. The book moves at a fast enough pace that if you have programmed in another language, then you will still find the book valuable.

What do you need to use this book?

Note that Beginning Visual C# requires you to have access to either Visual Studio .NET or Visual C# .NET Standard Edition.

Beginning Visual C# Review

... I must say I read and checked the book from cover to cover - it is very well written and extremely accurate. The book is mainly aimed at programmers who use Visual C# to develop Windows Applications so it covers in detail the techniques of programming with Windows Forms, user controls, common dialogs and so on. Being a beginning book, it spends a lot of time coverig the basic concepts about C# and .NET programming (in fact, it starts with them). However, unlike with the other beginners books (I've seen most of them at the work place), it goes well beyond the basics and presents most features you'll likely need when developing Windows applications: deploying your application, accessing databases using ADO.NET, working with files, playing with GDI+ and much more. At the end it even has two chapters on ASP.NET and Web Services which are good to be read just to make an idea what are these all about, even if you're not currently doing any web programming.I highly recommend this book to programmers willing to read the chapters in sequential order, because most of them build upon the theory taught in the preceding ones. If you have time to do that, this book should be your primary choice. If you already have experience with C# and you need a reference book (or an advanced book), Professional C# is a better choice. Captialists Against Markets challenges the conventional wisdom that welfare state builders took their cues from labor and other progressive interests. Instead, Peter Swenson argues, pragmatic social reformers looked for support not only from below but also from above, taking into account capitalists interests and preferences. With original theory and surprising historical evidence, Capitalists Against Markets illuminates the political conditions for greater economic equality and social security in capitalist societies.

Capitalists against Markets: The Making of Labor Markets and Welfare States in the United States and Sweden Review

In the early 20th century, the attitude of the capitalist class in Sweden was almost the exact opposite of conventional wisdom. Not only did business organizations welcome the growth of unions, they actually aided in the process. For the most part, they offered at best half-hearted opposition to the expansion of the welfare state and sometimes eagerly backed it.

The Swedish labor market of the early 20th century was perhaps the mirror opposite of what we associate with modern industrial economies. Rather than suffering a labor surplus (high unemployment) the Swedish labor market was suffering a chronic labor shortage, in part because of emigration, to the US and elsewhere. Eager to control the union demands, the lockout was a regular tactic used by Swedish employers associations. If the author is to be believed, they were quite successful at mounting lockouts within industries and sometimes across industries. Fearing the militant unions, the mainstream unions often tacitly approved of the employer tactics.

What runs through the employer strategy is an ingrained fear of competition from other capitalists who would lure employees away from existing employers, or alternately undercut the established companies with lower cost products. Unlike some American employers who attempted to ensure worker loyalty with "welfare capitalism", Swedish employers judiciously rejected the notion of non-wage benefits and were particularly strident in their attempts to curtail the introduction of such benefits by non-compliant employers. They also feared "chiselers" who undercut the sales of the mainstream businesses with lower prices as a result of lower labor costs. Viewed from this perspective, "solidarism" with the state and labor in the form of an array of social benefits financed through broad-based taxation was appealing. Thus the author takes issue with those who claim Sweden's generous welfare state is a result of labor agitation alone, rather he suggests capital was an active and willing promoter.

The author notes similar attitudes among some US business leaders although he doesn't really try to determine why the American capitalists were less inclined to support a similar level of state-financed social welfare. Curiously, the Swedish capitalists in his book seem indifferent to the level of taxation imposed upon them. The failure to address these two points weakens the author's thesis slightly. However, it is still an interesting proposition and one that has plausibility.
