This book will change the way that we think about derivatives and approach the market. If anything, derivatives should be renamed contingent claims, where contingency is now absolute and no longer derivative, and the market is just its medium. Also, the book establishes the missing link between quantitative modelling (no longer dependent on probability theory but on a novel brand of mathematics which Elie calls the mathematics of price) and the reality of the market.

I am relieved to finally find a book that deals with Black Swan Events in a new way. Ayache brings a reverse-probabilistic perspective: instead of
considering that a price is the result of probabilistically derived expectation, he reverses the issues and investigates these artificial
constructs as "probabilities" and "expectations" as secondary, derived, fictitious concepts that we bring about to explain prices, decisions, and
other things.
This, of course, is just the beginning, so one has to be understanding about the speculative aspect of the effort --so view this as a gutsy look
at the "end of probability" and how we will need to envision the world once we get rid of this artificial, antiquated tool.
I am also glad to see that those of us trained in the trading of options can have views original enough to influence the philosophy of probability
and the philosophical understanding of contingency.

There is a great deal of practice, discussion, and publication about strategy, but surprisingly little investigation of the processes by which strategies actually form in organizations. Henry Mintzberg, one of the world's leading thinkers and writers on management, has over several decades examined the processes by which strategies have formed in a variety of contexts, and this book collects together his findings.

Defining realized strategy - the strategy an organization has actually pursued - as a pattern in a stream of actions, this investigation tracked strategies in organizations over long periods of time, usually three or four decades, and in one case, a century and a half. This revealed the patterns by which strategies form and change in organizations, the interplay of 'deliberate' with 'emergent' strategies, and the relationships between leadership, organization, and environment in the strategy
formation process.

An introductory chapter considers the term strategy, and the various ways it has been and can be used, and then introduces the studies. These are reported in the next ten chapters, with descriptions and conclusions about the strategies were formed over time, and how they combined to establish periods in the history of the organization.

These studies range across business (six studies), government (two studies), an architectural firm, and a university, as well as one professor in that university. They include U.S. strategy in Vietnam (1950-1973), Volkswagenwrk (1937-1972), and the National Film Board of Canada (1939-1975).

The final chapter, entitled 'Toward a General Theory of Strategy Formation', weaves these findings together in two themes. First is strategy formation in different forms of organization: Strategic Planning in the Machine Organization, Strategic Visioning in the Entrepreneurial Organization, Strategic Learning in the Adhocracy Organization, and Strategic Venturing in the Professional Organization. The second theme considers stages in the formation of strategies, from Initiation through
Development to Renewal.

Tracking Strategies: Toward a General Theory Review

This book is slow-paced. you really need to take time to read it. It has nice illustrations and they do help to clarify some aspects of the book. otherwise, if you are doing a case study, then this book is helpful. You can see how Mintzberg approaches his case organizations and how he details his findings.
The book starts with the basics: what is strategy, how can strategy be formed and what kind of strategies there are.

I bought the kindle version of this book. The text books are really not good for kindle (unless the author writes the references on each page) because it is not so easy to go back and forth to find the references in Kindle.
