Democratic Education (Princeton Paperbacks)

Product Description
Who should have the authority to shape the education of citizens in a democracy? This is the central question posed by Amy Gutmann in the first book-length study of the democratic theory of education. The author tackles a wide range of issues, from the democratic case against book banning to the role of teachers' unions in education, as well as the vexed questions of public support for private schools and affirmative action in college admissions.
</p>Democratic Education (Princeton Paperbacks) Review
I had to write this review because the only other review gave this book only one star. This book is a classic and will be around for a long time because Gutmann lays out a compelling theory about the purposes of public education in a democracy and defends her theory against competing ideas. I especially appreciate her historical outlook and her analysis of how some claim parents, for example, should be the primary decision-makers when it comes to public schools (or students, or the state). It is probably the best book on the purposes and rationale for public education since Dewey. But it's especially important today since public education is under attack from those who would privatize and de-fund it.Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Democratic Education (Princeton Paperbacks)" are high quality item.
