This is the first volume in Sergius Bulgakov's trilogy on Divine-Humanity. He took this revolutionary concept from Russian religious philosophy and attempted to integrate it into Orthodox Trinitarian and Christological theology. The result is a breathtaking work of systematic theology that allows the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to shine out with stunning clarity.

Bulgakov begins with the unresolved dialectic contained in the Chalcedonian formula of the unity and separation between the divine and human natures in Christ. This undeveloped source of theological reflection yields its riches when Bulgakov introduces the concept of Sophia, the divine wisdom. This allows him to work out a balanced resolution to the Chalcedonian formula that sheds light on the person and work of Christ as seen in the gospels.
