Three Modes of Perception in Mozart: The Philosophical, Pastoral, and Comic in Cosí fan tutte (Cambridge Studies in Opera)

Product Description
Cosi fan tutte is widely regarded as Mozart's most enigmatic opera with Lorenzo Da Ponte's most erudite text. Edmund Goehring presents a new perspective on the relationships between text and tone in the opera, the tension between comedy and philosophy as well as its representation in stage works, and the pastoral mode. Goehring's argument is sustained by the detailed analysis of primary sources (many of which are little known), and is richly illustrated with musical examples.Three Modes of Perception in Mozart: The Philosophical, Pastoral, and Comic in Cos fan tutte (Cambridge Studies in Opera) Review
The cover calls this "the first full-lengh scholarly study ... of Mozart's most enigmatic opera. " It reads as if it was born from a Ph.D thesis and matured in the age of publish or perish. Already by page four comes the formerly favored word of academia, "hermeneutic". This is not the book for those outside of the intended scholarly audience. No libretto has been included, nor a glossary of the many Italian terms. A book for Cosi fans this is not.{ As deep as this study goes, several apparent errors glare. For instance, Fiordiligi,it is said ,"conceals herself in Guilielmo's uniform ". The libretto however clearly states she dons "L' abito di Ferrando" so the book misses an additional enigma--why is she going to throw herself in Guglielmo's arms wearing Ferrando's clothes? )
