Second-Order Change in Psychotherapy: The Golden Thread That Unifies Effective Treatments

Product Description
After more than 40 years of research, a substantial body of evidence has shown psychotherapy to be helpful in ameliorating psychological suffering. This is seldom questioned in professional circles, yet intense debate persists over how, when, and why therapy works. Those claiming to know the answers fall into two main camps, one arguing that some empirically supported treatments are therapeutic for specific problems, while others are less effective. The other camp posits that all approaches work equally well, as long as a strong therapist client relationship and other common curative factors are present.
Can both doctrines be correct? Second-Order Change in Psychotherapy: The Golden Thread That Unifies Effective Treatments asserts that they can, but what is needed is a unifying framework of change that underlies both positions. Drs. Fraser and Solovey identify that framework as second-order change in psychotherapy, or the "golden thread" that runs through the labyrinth of all effective therapies. To better elucidate this, first-order change refers to solutions that do not change the problem but that create stability, while second-order change transforms the first-order solutions, resulting in a resolution of the problem.
In this fascinating and rich book written for researchers, practical theorists, and policy makers, the authors show how second-order change is at the core of all effective treatments and demonstrate how to creatively employ specific, targeted approaches in an interpersonal context of shared respect, empathy, and compassion.

Every once in a while there comes a book that is not only well-written, emperically sound, and well-researched, but also one which shifts my perspective. Second-Order Change in Psychotherapy by J. Scott Fraser and Andrew D. Solovey is a gold-mine find, and now at the top of that very small list. From their interesting, somewhat counterintuitive perspective on the how's and why's of second-order shifts (explained in detail in the book-- you'll understand and be amazed) and how such shifts are integral to good problem formulation, problem resolution, and therapy in general. This book is easy to understand and very complex concepts are explained well. I feel I can use what I have learned right away-- a definite plus. As a psychologist myself, I feel I have gotten such a good deal in buying this book-- I emerged more aware of not only the latest research in terms of literature review in certain areas (depression, substance abuse, anxiety), but also how using the concept of second order shifts and second order change can create, initiate, enhancing, excite, and support change. I have found this book extremely helpful, and one which I have shared with many of my collegues. I am also using its' concepts in my perspective on issues in the general world today. As I've recognized the importance of second-order change, I feel I've even noticed second-order changes in myself! Kudos to Fraser and Solovey-- this book is valuable so get out and grab it while you can! I promise you won't be disappointed. It's a valueable resource for practicing clinicians and any invested graduate students looking for a unified therapeutic perspective from which to practice-- one that is practical and fascinating. The literary community needs more authors like Fraser and Solovey-- this book is not just a job well done-- it is a true achievement in the breadth and depth of its' scope.
