The Indians haven't won a World Series for 65 years, but authors Fritz and Krsolovic give baseball fans everywhere a reason to envy Cleveland with this thorough history of League Park. There have been plenty of books written about baseball stadia and other sporting venues, but it is doubtful any of them serves up the rich nuances and utterly complete detail this one does.Readers gets plenty of the game between the lines but also the game outside them, such as why, when and how things were built. It explains the politics of certain moves and also gives a good dose of education about baseball itself through the various eras. Eventually, the reader comes to realize that the authors must have read every single edition of every Cleveland newspaper that covered League Park happenings over a more than 50-year span!
Cy Young, Tris Speaker and other more recent luminaries such as Bob Feller and Lou Boudreau are brought back to life. Highlights of each season are included, such as no-hitters, unassisted triple plays, pennant runs and bizarre happenings such as the beaning that led to a death and how no-baseball Sundays were dealt with. Although this book is a must for any Cleveland baseball fan, others will love it too. How did Joe DiMaggio's major league record 56-game hitting streak end in Cleveland? It's just one of the hundreds of MLB vignettes included. Dozens of historic baseball photos from an array of sources are included.
When you get done reading this, you'll wish Fritz and Krsolovic would give the same treatment to your favorite ballpark, wherever it might be.
