The Command of Grace sets forth a bold new critical initiative in theological apologetics, one that advances a fundamental reassessment of theological self-understanding and method today, especially in its attentiveness to the present reality of God in revelation. Many recent, predominating trends have tended to treat theological truth as something cognitively self-guaranteeing (‘tauto-theological') within doctrinal or other theoretical domains. Against this, and drawing on the philosophical heritage and Jewish thought, the book seeks to revive other basic modes of human attentiveness for fundamental theological questioning.

These are: � causal' attentiveness encountered through the faculties of bodily sensibility; and ‘appetitive' or ��motive' attentiveness encountered in the faculty of desire. Especially crucial here is the rejuvenation of the primacy of ‘motive reasoning' (reasoning with regard to motivations and desires) for theology's apologetical self-understanding, in addition to its normal engagement with �cognitive reasoning' (reasoning with regard to percepts and concepts). If God in his transcendent ��Godness' meets us in revelation not at the margins of the speculative intellect in the form of a denotatum for cognitive apprehension, but rather at the very centre of embodied life in the form of a summons to motivated action, then theology must seek to be attentive to God through all the endowed faculties of embodied-rational life: cognitive, sensible, and motive-appetitive.

The Command of Grace: A New Theological Apologetics Review

This is one heavy but rewarding book on Christian Theology and apologetics. I have read it twice and its still making Me refer back to it again and again. Paul Janz is another of those profound Theologians who in my opinion could mop the floor up with people like Richard Dawkins. I only put that in an antagonistic way, because of the vitriol that people like Dawkins spews forth all the time. Anyways, before I go off on a tangent, back to this book. This book is not your usual "Apologetics kind of fare. Its much deeper and much more rewarding, if the reader is willing to put in the required work. Thats a big assumption in our current two minute attention span culture. One major emphasis of Dr Janz, is the complete otherness of God from the Created World. This is a point that many are making again today, and its a welcome point. There is so much new age "We are Divine" kinds of ideas today, that this is a much needed point to highlight. In the book He delves deeply into issues of Epistemology and Ontology. Thinkers such as Kant, Bonhoeffer, Levinas, Heidegger, Barth, Wittgenstein and many others are engaged. Throughout the book He keeps making the point about the difference of God from Creation. Chapter 4 in the book is a very good study on this theme. He focuses on the fact that God is not another being in the universe. That the Universe plus God does not equal one more "thing" in Reality. God is outside of our very categories of thinking, in this regard. This was the criticism vocalized by philosopher Martin Heidegger. Though He tended to go too far with it. To put it far too simplistically, God does not exist the way that We exist. God is not finite. Not enclosed by categories of Space and Time, ect. This has implications for that question that children often voice. Well, Who made God? That is a categorial mistake, but a very understandable one. It profoundly misunderstands what the very concept of God entails in my opinion.
Later in that chapter He engages with Bonhoeffer's Incarnational theology and how this is all the more amazing, that the Wholly other God has come really into our space/time world and its finite categorial parameters, out of love for our sakes. Well I could go on and on. Suffice it say, this book is a difficult study. Its one of those studies that you know you will have to read and re-read again to really grasp it fully. I hope I have been somewhat close in giving a lucid review of it. There is much that I have not addressed and for that I apologize. I just wanted to comment on the part of the book that most grabed my attention. Thanks for reading my review.
